    Evaluation of Mixing Characteristics of Diets Containing Modified Distillers Grains

    Six mixes of feed were manufactured and analyzed to determine how sequence of ingredient addition into a feed mixer influences mixing characteristics when modified distillers grains (mDG) was used as a feed ingredient. Five mixes were manufactured using a 3-bar rotor mixer and one mix was manufactured using a staggered-rotor mixer. There were three diet types evaluated: 1) high-forage receiving diet; 2) high-grain finishing diet with ground grass hay (GH) as the roughage source; and 3) high-grain finishing diet with silage as the roughage source. Five samples were collected from each mix and were analyzed for particle size and nutrient composition to determine within load coefficient of variation (CV). Based on these data mDG should be added before GH. The within load CV for particle size, CP, ADF, and sulfur were lower for a diet containing silage and mixed in a staggered-rotor mixer compared with a diet containing GH mixed in a 3-bar rotor mixer

    Lip channels profile usually failed before reaching its maximum loaddue to torsional. To avoid this problem, usually lateral support isprovided to the profile. One of the solution is by filling the profile withconcrete material (composite). The purpose of this research is to knowthe bending strength ratio of lip channels profile to lip channels-concretecomposite. The specimens in this research is lip channelsC85x40x8x0.90, C85x40x8x0.65, C75x40x10x0.75, C75x40x10x0.65and two pieces of composite beams of 85x40x1100 mm with two piecesof composite beams 75x40x1100 mm. Beside the bending strength testas the main test, additional test should be runned by concretecompression test using 12 pieces of 150x150x150 cube and 12 pieces oflip channels. Based on this research, it is found that the bending strengthof the lip channels (P-1) and composite beam (K-1) are 262.06 MPa and366.35 MPa each. The result means that there is 1.40 (39.80%)increasing in bending strength. For P-2 the bending strength is 268.64MPa while K-2 is 453.60 MPa or increased 1.69 (68.85%). For P-3bending strength is 180.90 MPa while K-3 is 364.75 MPa, increased 2.02(101.63%). For P-4 the bending strength is 207.59 MPa while K-4 is430.05 MPa, increased 2.07( 107.16%)

    Relationship Between Fat Content and NE values for Some Ethanol Byproducts

    A finishing phase study was conducted to measure the impact of the fat content of ethanol byproducts on the relative Net Energy values for these feedstuffs. The three feedstuffs with varying crude fat content used included a commercially available corn gluten feed corn distillers grains blend (CGD); a corn wet distillers grains without solubles (WDG); and corn wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS). Byproducts were incorporated as 40% of the finishing diets (DM basis) replacing corn and SBM components of the control (CO) diet. There were 6 pens of 7 or 8 yearling steers on each treatment during the 130 d experiment. The assayed average dietary fat content for the CO, CGD, WDG, and WDGS diets were 2.91%, 4.95%, 5.34% and 6.58%, respectively. Increasing fat content of diets (and byproducts) was associated with increased dietary NE content. Diet NEG values derived from steer performance were 60.6, 59.7, 62.0 and 64.6 Mcal/cwt for CO, CGD, WDG and WDGS, respectively. Assuming that the substituted grain had a NEG value of 68 Mcal/cwt, the derived NEG values for the three byproducts were 65.8, 71.5 and 78.1 Mcal/cwt for the CGD, WDG and WDGS diets, respectively. Regression of diet fat content against NEG content indicated that fat represented 2.02 times the NE content of non-fat diet components (P \u3c .02; r2 = 0.26)

    The effects of a tea tree oil-containing gel on plaque and chronic gingivitis

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.Background: This clinical study assessed the effects of topically applied tea tree oil (TTO)-containing gel on dental plaque and chronic gingivitis. Methods: This was a double-blind, longitudinal, non-crossover study in 49 medically fit non-smokers (24 males and 25 females) aged 18–60 years with severe chronic gingivitis. Subjects were randomly assigned to three groups and given either TTO-gel (2.5 per cent), chlorhexidine (CHX) gel (0.2 per cent), or a placebo gel to apply with a toothbrush twice daily. Treatment effects were assessed using the Gingival Index (GI), Papillary Bleeding Index (PBI) and plaque staining score (PSS) at four and eight weeks. Results: No adverse reactions to any of the gels were reported. The data were separated into subsets by tooth (anterior and posterior) and tooth surface (buccal and lingual). The TTO group had significant reduction in PBI and GI scores. However, TTO did not reduce plaque scores, which tended to increase over the latter weeks of the study period. Conclusion: Although further studies are required, the anti-inflammatory properties of TTO-containing gel applied topically to inflamed gingival tissues may prove to be a useful non-toxic adjunct to chemotherapeutic periodontal therapy.S Soukoulis and R Hirsc

    Electrocatalytic CO2 conversion to C2 products: Catalysts design, market perspectives and techno-economic aspects

    The energy crisis caused by the incessant growth in global energy demand joint to its associated greenhouse emissions motivates the urgent need to control and mitigate atmospheric CO2 levels. Leveraging CO2 as carbon pool to produce value-added products represents a cornerstone of the circular economy. Among the CO2 utilization strategies, electrochemical reduction of CO2 conversion to produce fuels and chemicals is booming due to its versatility and end-product flexibility. Herein most of the studies focused on C1 products although C2 and C2+ compounds are chemically and economically more appealing targets requiring advanced catalytic materials. Still, despite the complex pathways for C2+ products formation, their multiple and assorted applications have motivated the search of suitable electrocatalysts. In this review, we gather and analyse in a comprehensive manner the progress made regarding C2+ products considering not only the catalyst design and the electrochemistry features but also techno-economic aspects in order to envisage the most profitable scenarios. This state-of-the-art analysis showcases that electrochemical reduction of CO2 to C2 products will play a key role in the decarbonisation of the chemical industry paving the way towards a low-carbon future

    HENA, heterogeneous network-based data set for Alzheimer's disease.

    Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia are the top cause for disabilities in later life and various types of experiments have been performed to understand the underlying mechanisms of the disease with the aim of coming up with potential drug targets. These experiments have been carried out by scientists working in different domains such as proteomics, molecular biology, clinical diagnostics and genomics. The results of such experiments are stored in the databases designed for collecting data of similar types. However, in order to get a systematic view of the disease from these independent but complementary data sets, it is necessary to combine them. In this study we describe a heterogeneous network-based data set for Alzheimer's disease (HENA). Additionally, we demonstrate the application of state-of-the-art graph convolutional networks, i.e. deep learning methods for the analysis of such large heterogeneous biological data sets. We expect HENA to allow scientists to explore and analyze their own results in the broader context of Alzheimer's disease research

    An Exploratory Study into the Factors Impeding Ethical Consumption

    Although consumers are increasingly engaged with ethical factors when forming opinions about products and making purchase decisions, recent studies have highlighted significant differences between consumers’ intentions to consume ethically, and their actual purchase behaviour. This article contributes to an understanding of this “ethical purchasing gap” through a review of existing literature, and the inductive analysis of focus group discussions. A model is suggested which includes exogenous variables such as moral maturity and age which have been well covered in the literature, together with further impeding factors identified from the focus group discussions. For some consumers, inertia in purchasing behaviour was such that the decision-making process was devoid of ethical considerations. Several manifested their ethical views through post-purchase dissonance and retrospective feelings of guilt. Others displayed a reluctance to consume ethically due to personal constraints, a perceived negative impact on image or quality, or an outright negation of responsibility. Those who expressed a desire to consume ethically often seemed deterred by cynicism, which caused them to question the impact they, as an individual, could achieve. These findings enhance the understanding of ethical consumption decisions and provide a platform for future research in this area

    Hidden geometric correlations in real multiplex networks

    Real networks often form interacting parts of larger and more complex systems. Examples can be found in different domains, ranging from the Internet to structural and functional brain networks. Here, we show that these multiplex systems are not random combinations of single network layers. Instead, they are organized in specific ways dictated by hidden geometric correlations between the individual layers. We find that these correlations are strong in different real multiplexes, and form a key framework for answering many important questions. Specifically, we show that these geometric correlations facilitate: (i) the definition and detection of multidimensional communities, which are sets of nodes that are simultaneously similar in multiple layers; (ii) accurate trans-layer link prediction, where connections in one layer can be predicted by observing the hidden geometric space of another layer; and (iii) efficient targeted navigation in the multilayer system using only local knowledge, which outperforms navigation in the single layers only if the geometric correlations are sufficiently strong.
